How to Always Have Something to WearChoosing an Outfit When Nothing in Your Wardrobe is Inspiring
A wardrobe full of clothes that refuse to co-operate and translate into an appropriate outfit that suits your plan for the day and your disposition is all too common.
Andrée Putman once said “I love America, and I love American women. But there is one thing that deeply shocks me – American closets. I cannot believe one can dress well when one has so much”. This quote rings true, especially here is Australia- the more you have in your closet, the less you seem to have to wear. So, on the days when your closet is boring, uneventful and bland, try a few techniques that will help you get dressed, on your way out the door and ready to take on the world. The KISS PrincipleKeep it simple stupid! Choosing an outfit does not need to be over-thought. Sometimes the first outfit that jumps out at you is the one that will work for you that day. Adding your favourite jewellery or scarf is sometimes just enough to make you look pulled together without actually trying. Choose something that you have worn before that you know works for you. Try top and pants combo that you may have worn last week but was comfortable and unfussy. But, even as great as it looked last week, today might be harder to make it work. Your favourite broken in jeans and a twin set is easy and fool-proof. Wear the Entire Outfit. If you are heading to work and stuck to find yet another outfit for the office, make a beeline for the whole outfit. The pants suit that matches and the shirt from the same brand are great when you are stuck for ideas. In Australia clothing brands like Portmans, Jacqui E, Tokito and Cue, design their clothing to co-ordinate with their existing pieces. So try the suit with their shirt or knit top from their collection and jewellery from their accessories range. The outfit will work and save you the hassle of mixing and matching when you are just not in the mood. Going in For The Kill. When you have a free day, like a weekend or a day you call into work “sick”, dedicate that day to your wardrobe and planning outfits. Go for a massive cull, if you haven’t worn something within the last 12 months, then it is safe to say you will never wear it again. Take photos of clothing that works together, and create a space for these photos, in a book, on a pin up board or even in a shoe box. Then on the days you are feeling uninspired, you can go through the photos and basically just choose an outfit. Think of it as your own personal boutique catalogue. Just Having a Bad Day.We all have days where we just feel bland and bored with our wardrobes, and with ourselves. These days usually translate to a day where we do not want to be noticed, wanting to fly under the radar at work and avoiding conversations on the train. Sometimes the simple things are best. The plain black pants with a white shirt. The shift dress with plain pumps. The favourite broken in jeans with a simple cardigan. As women we do not always want to be the centre of attention. We all have days when we feel frumpy and heavy. And on these days, when your disposition is slightly less than sunny, it is perfectly ok to just wear something simple and easy, just to get through the day.
